“I’ve built something that runs with or without me. That’s sustainability. That’s leadership.”
In the fast-paced world of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), resilience, adaptability and a clear strategic vision are critical to long-term success. Dumisani Jacobs Mkhwebane, founder and 100% owner of a Johannesburg-based ICT company, embodies all three of these traits. Over the past three years, he has successfully navigated the volatile business landscape, transforming his company from a small, emerging player into a more structured and strategic enterprise.
Dumisani didn’t just want to run a business — he wanted to build something meaningful. As the founder of Technology Infrastructure Architects (Pty) Ltd, Dumisani set out to create simplified, secure technology solutions that made a real difference. And while the journey hasn’t always been easy, it has been one of growth, clarity and transformation.
When Dumisani joined the Supply Chain Support Programme, a 12-month incubation initiative, he already had the passion and technical skills. What he gained through the programme was structure, vision alignment and a deeper understanding of how to lead strategically. One of his most memorable moments came during a year-end team strategy session where he introduced something unexpected — a “letter from the future.”
This letter – written as if by future Dumisani to current-day Dumisani – was more than just a motivational exercise. It was his way of painting a clear, vivid picture of where the business was headed. “The letter had real impact,” he says. “It helped me communicate the vision in a way I hadn’t managed to before. Everyone could see where we’re going and how they fit in.” That clarity shifted everything. The team aligned, motivation soared and the company culture began to strengthen around a shared purpose.
With his team behind him and a stronger sense of direction, Dumisani began building a long-term strategy. No longer focused on short-term wins, he and his management team started making decisions with the future in mind — about which products to offer, what kind of clients to pursue and how to ensure long-term sustainability. One of his smartest moves was to segment his customer base into Gold, Silver and Bronze tiers, based on the value of services offered. This allowed him to better serve his clients while building predictable, consistent revenue streams.
A key milestone during the programme was securing a strategic partnership with Samsung, who advanced R1.5 million in managed services funding through TIA. This partnership was not only a vote of confidence in Dumisani’s business, it also opened the door to more opportunities for growth, operations and expansion. “The support from Samsung helped us create momentum. It gave us the space we needed to build and think long term.”
At the same time, Dumisani began developing a predictive safety software solution focused on detecting driver fatigue, with a special focus on the mining industry. “This one is personal,” he says. “We’re building technology that can help prevent accidents and potentially save lives. That’s the kind of work that excites me, where innovation meets real-world impact.” Through regular engagement with stakeholders and unions, he’s ensuring the solution is both technically strong and socially relevant.
Throughout the programme, Dumisani’s growth as a leader was evident. His final board simulation was a standout moment — he scored an impressive 76% and was praised for his clarity, professionalism and preparation. “That experience changed how I look at the business. I stepped back and viewed everything from the outside. It made me ask the right questions and that’s been my approach ever since.” To support that growth, he began using The Dialogue Method with his team — an open communication framework that’s helped unlock creativity and alignment. “It’s made a huge difference. People feel seen and heard. That’s how you build real buy-in.”
With all these shifts — strategic, operational and personal — it’s no surprise that Dumisani’s business is entering a new chapter with purpose and momentum. His theme for 2025 is “Breaking New Ground,” and it couldn’t be more fitting. He and his team are actively exploring new markets, offering new services and operating with a renewed sense of focus and ambition.
Looking back, Dumisani says he’s most proud of the systems now in place. “I’ve built something that runs with or without me. That’s sustainability. That’s leadership.” His advice to other entrepreneurs is simple but powerful: “Every business is different but the principles are the same — know your numbers, build your strategy, market smart and most importantly, grow yourself. You define the culture. The business reflects who you are.”
Today, Dumisani stands not just as the founder of a growing ICT company, but as a focused, visionary leader who turned potential into progress — and he didn’t do it alone. He did it with the invaluable support of ECN. In a message to his sponsor, Dumisani said, “On behalf of Technology Infrastructure Architects (TIA Solutions), we sincerely thank ECN for sponsoring our participation in the Raizcorp 3-Year Business Development Programme. Your generous support has given us a valuable opportunity to strengthen our business, refine our strategy and unlock new growth. The mentorship, exposure and resources we’ve received through Raizcorp have made a real and lasting impact on our operations and vision.
We truly appreciate ECN’s commitment to empowering South African businesses and fostering sustainable entrepreneurship.
