Engagements to set up recycling plant in progress

Voluntary Carbon Credits Market Forum (AVCCMF), through its Mvelo brand, is actively engaging investors to secure a US$1 million investment for the establishment of a plastic recycling plant and production of climate-smart construction products in Bulawayo.

The primary objectives of this initiative are to enhance waste management practices and facilitate the production of climate-smart construction products.

By recycling plastic waste, Mvelo aims to contribute to environmental sustainability and address the pressing issue of plastic pollution.

Mvelo has two different arms which include Mvelo Care which produces smart agriculture products such as organic fertiliser and Mvelo Build which produces construction products that include tiles and poles from recycled plastic waste.

In an interview, AVCCMF media and communications director and Mvelo projects co-ordinator Mr Gregory Luiz said climate change is a consequence of several factors which include deforestation, emission of gases by vehicles and other things and several other things that result in changes in weather and rainfall partners.

“We are in talks with potential investors and carbon market players to raise at least US$1 million for the Bulawayo plant and support infrastructure for waste processing and collection points, which will be strategically placed in Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South,” said Mr Luiz.

Mr Luiz said Mvelo is collecting plastic waste and shredding it into small pieces which are then processed into different products from the AVCCMF plant in Botswana as they wait for the establishment of the Bulawayo plant.

Mvelo is currently producing roofing tiles and construction poles for plastics.

He also said they are producing organic fertilisers where they mix manure with activated charcoal.

AVCCMF seeks to put Africa in the driving seat of the climate space, enhancing Africa’s role as the world’s carbon sink, unlocking climate finance to accelerate the attainment of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by African countries and shaping the trajectory for Africa Agenda 2063.

The forum is championing collaborative and inclusive climate action to save the planet and accelerate Africa’s participation in the global climate economy.

According to Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, the Forum has been leading the development of strategic partnerships and collaborations that promote robust and effective voluntary climate action on the African continent.

Through carbon offsetting, practical steps were taken to achieve the Kyoto Protocol Carbon Footprint targets.

AVCCMF also holds forums to educate locals about the climate economy, environmental management, waste management and renewable energy among other issues.

Mr Luiz also said plans are in place to engage authorities including city councils to assist in terms of waste collection and landfill management, which include sorting of waste and creating employment through waste picking.

In terms of climate financing, Mr Luiz said the Government needs to implement projects such as renewable energy to increase carbon credits. —chronicle.c.zw
