ZimTrade mission to Tete strengthens trade ties
The Zimbabwe Trade Development and Promotion Organisation (ZimTrade) is spearheading a vital initiative to solidify trade ties between Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The organisation’s Outward Seller Mission to Tete Province, Mozambique, which began on Tuesday and ends on Thursday signifies ZimTrade’s ongoing commitment to connecting Zimbabwean exporters with prominent buyers in the neighbouring nation.
This mission, which enjoys the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade along with partners in Mozambique, exemplifies the success of ZimTrade’s programmes designed to foster stronger linkages between the two countries’ business communities.
The positive impact of these programmes is demonstrably evident in the substantial growth of Zimbabwe’s exports to Mozambique.
Danai Majaha, ZimTrade’s communication manager, cites figures from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) which reveal an impressive 80,7 percent increase in exports to Mozambique during the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.
This translates to a significant jump from US$106,4 million to US$192,2 million, highlighting the burgeoning trade relationship.
Majaha attributes this remarkable surge in exports directly to the linkages created by ZimTrade’s initiatives.
Mozambican buyers are increasingly drawn to the superior quality of Zimbabwean products, which often outshine offerings from competing markets.
However, to maintain this competitive edge, Zimbabwe must focus on several key areas.
Firstly, continued efforts are required to solidify and strengthen the connections fostered by ZimTrade’s programmes.
This ensures a smooth and ongoing dialogue between Zimbabwean exporters and Mozambican buyers, facilitating mutually beneficial trade partnerships.
Secondly, it is crucial to boost production capacity within Zimbabwe. The growing demand in Mozambique necessitates an increase in the volume of goods produced to meet this demand and capitalise on the emerging market opportunities.
Thirdly, adopting modern production processes is paramount.
By implementing these advancements, Zimbabwean manufacturers can enhance efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This will not only streamline production but also contribute to maintaining competitive pricing for their products.
Finally, developing and implementing strategies to reduce the cost of production and export is essential.
While the quality of Zimbabwean products is demonstrably superior, excessively high production and export costs pose a significant threat. By addressing these cost factors, Zimbabwean exporters can ensure their products remain competitively priced in the Mozambican market.
ZimTrade’s mission to Tete, along with similar initiatives, plays a critical role in solidifying Zimbabwe’s position as a leading exporter to Mozambique.
The superior quality of Zimbabwean products is a significant advantage. However, to fully capitalise on this opportunity and secure long-term success, focusing on stronger linkages, increased production, modern production processes, and cost reduction strategies is crucial.
By addressing these areas, Zimbabwe can pave the way for a flourishing trade relationship between the two countries, benefiting businesses and economies on both sides of the border.-ebusinessweekly
