‘Showcase world-class products, services’… Bulawayo businesses urged ahead of ZITF
BUSINESS leaders have encouraged Bulawayo businesses to begin preparations so they can be ready to offer world-class products and services during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF), which will be held in Zimbabwe’s second-largest city next month.
The 65th edition of the premier annual trade showcase is scheduled for April 21 to 26 at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC) and will run under the theme “Industrialisation: Crafting an Integrated Economic Landscape.”
This year’s event will span six days, up from the usual five, providing more opportunities for business and networking among exhibitors, stakeholders and visitors. ZITF 2025 will also commemorate the ZITF Blue Sapphire anniversary, celebrating decades of excellence in promoting innovation and fostering regional business growth.
In an interview, Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) Matabeleland Chapter past vice-president and businessman, Mr Louis Herbst, said ZITF was more than just an event.
“As we approach ZITF once again, it is crucial for us to re-evaluate our objectives and strategies as businesses and key industry players. ZITF is not just an event; it is a powerful platform brimming with potential and opportunity,” he said.
“Whether engaging as a visitor or an exhibitor, we must remain mindful of our surroundings — the City of Kings, Matopos and the broader Matabeleland region — all of which hold significant potential for re-industrialisation.”
He added that the trade showcase also offered great opportunities for the tourism and hospitality sectors.
“With an influx of visitors, both local and international, there is a chance to showcase our rich cultural heritage, historical sites, and natural attractions. Hotels, restaurants and tour operators can capitalise on this increased foot traffic, providing unique experiences that highlight the beauty and diversity of our region,” he said.
Mr Herbst further noted that ZITF also provided a unique opportunity for local businesses to explore new investment opportunities in the region.
He explained: “ZITF serves as a marriage of potential, bringing together industry leaders from across the nation and beyond. Its track record of success highlights the importance of networking, collaboration and partnership, all of which can occur under one roof during the fair.
“Local businesses have the chance to showcase their innovations, connect with potential partners, and gain insights into market trends that can enhance their offerings.”
Bulawayo Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprise (SMEs) vice-chairperson, Ms Sithabile Bhebhe, said by actively participating in ZITF 2025, Bulawayo and the region’s SMEs could significantly boost their income while contributing to the city’s overall economic growth.
“Increased sales and partnerships not only benefit individual enterprises but also strengthen our local economy, creating a ripple effect that can lead to job creation and improved livelihoods for our community,” she said.
She added that the ZITF was a major boost to the Bulawayo business ecosystem, and SMEs were quite upbeat and optimistic about this year’s event, keen to capitalise on the trade showcase and highlight local capabilities.
Hospitality Association of Zimbabwe (HAZ) Bulawayo Chapter Hotels representative Mr Fungai Mutseyekwa, expressed optimism about the trade showcase’s potential to boost the tourism sector.
“Most hotels and lodges are technically full for ZITF. In certain instances, the demand for space is exceeding the available inventory. Those who choose to secure accommodation closer to ZITF dates, might end up settling for rooms in homestays or other alternatives apart from the hotels and lodges,” he said.
“ZITF plays a key role in boosting the province’s economy as well as the tourism sector. From a HAZ perspective, there is a strong emphasis on maintaining high standards of service and safety.
“Members are being encouraged to implement best practices in health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of guests and staff alike.”
Over the years, the trade fair has been one of the biggest economic events for the city in particular and the country in general.
During ZITF, Bulawayo witnesses a hive of activity as government officials, diplomats, international buyers, local and foreign exhibitors and captains of industry, among others, converge on the city for the country’s premier showcase.
It provides a platform for Bulawayo companies to rise to the occasion and put themselves on the world map by creating new partnerships and synergies.
Infrastructure development and renovations are already underway in the city, including road markings and rehabilitation in the Central Business District (CBD) and the Zimbabwe International Conference and Exhibition Smart City (ZICES) area.-chroncile
