Ministry partners with private sector to bolster consumer rights
THE Ministry of Industry and Commerce, in collaboration with the private sector, is spearheading a drive to empower consumers and protect their rights amid growing concerns over deceptive trade practices by some businesses.
Consumers have the right to accurate and unbiased information about products and services to make informed choices that align with their interests. This initiative aims to safeguard consumers from unfair treatment, misinformation, and fraudulent practices while fostering fair competition.
Zimbabwe has witnessed a concerning trend of unscrupulous businesses engaging in deceptive trade practices, much to the detriment of consumers.
Through various initiatives and enforcement actions, the Government is actively working to create a level playing field where fair competition thrives and consumers are protected.
In a statement, the Ministry emphasised its commitment to creating a marketplace where fairness and safety prevail.
“As the administrator of Consumer Protection and Trade Measures legislation, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce is committed to safeguarding your rights and safety in the marketplace,” the statement read.
Operating under the motto, “Empowering Consumers, Enhancing Trust—Together we can build a fair and safe market for all”, the Ministry is intensifying efforts to uphold consumer rights.
As part of ensuring that consumers are protected, the Ministry said it is conducting regular market surveillance, investigating consumer complaints, collaborating with stakeholders to improve standards, educating consumers through awareness campaigns, and strengthening consumer protection laws and regulations.
The Ministry’s Trade Measures Department, the Consumer Protection Commission and other agencies are actively campaigning against businesses that engage in illicit and deceptive practices.
These efforts include monitoring compliance, penalising violators, and promoting adherence to ethical standards in commerce.
The Government’s consumer empowerment initiative is designed to foster trust between consumers and businesses, ensuring a fair marketplace where rights are respected, and ethical competition flourishes.
