‘Mining companies can help maintain country’s roads’

The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) last night headlined a welcome cocktail of the Mine Entra conference at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre in Bulawayo where the organisation highlighted possible synergies with the mining sector that can help to develop and maintain the country’s road infrastructure.

Addressing delegates from the mining industry, Zinara revenue operations director Mrs Patience Shuro said the organisation was wary of the invaluable contribution of mining companies to Zimbabwe’s economic growth.

She invited mining companies to participate in road infrastructure maintenance through partnerships with road authorities.

“By investing in road infrastructure, mining companies can enhance their own operational efficiency and reduce transportation costs,” said Mrs Shuro.

“Smooth and well-maintained roads not only lead to shorter travel times but also minimise vehicle wear and tear, reducing maintenance expenses for mining companies.

“Moreover, a well-maintained road network positively impacts the safety of transportation. By ensuring that our roads are in optimal condition, mining companies can mitigate the risk of accidents and the associated costs, protecting both their workforce and valuable assets.”

Mrs Shuro pointed out that investing in road maintenance demonstrates good corporate social responsibility and fosters positive relationships with local communities.

She said mining companies could prolong the lifespan of the country’s road infrastructure through optimal utilisation of rail transport.

She said while the road authorities were undertaking various road maintenance works with the funding managed by Zinara, the pace at which these resources can be employed to improve road infrastructure was being outpaced by the rate of deterioration.

“There is therefore a need for more hands on deck to accelerate road maintenance to avert further deterioration, which is more expensive to manage,” said Mrs Shuro.

“Mines have some of the best minds this country has to offer. The technical expertise found in the mines can be leveraged to provide sound guidance to road infrastructure projects.”

Mine Entra is renowned as a premier platform for mining industry stakeholders and the cocktail witnessed a gathering of prominent figures, including government officials, mining company executives, investors, and international delegates.

The event’s welcome cocktail served as a perfect backdrop for Zinara to showcase its commitment to improving the country’s road infrastructure and fostering economic growth.-chronicle
