John Pocock and Company celebrate 70 years of service in Bulawayo

FROM operating out of a single room and going door-to-door advertising their services, John Pocock and Company is this year celebrating its 70th anniversary, marking a legacy of resilience, professionalism, and commitment to Bulawayo.

Founded in 1955 by the late John Pocock, a former Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot, the company has a long and rich history in Bulawayo and is deeply intertwined with the growth and development of the City of Kings. Over seven decades, the firm has served countless clients with expertise, integrity, and a genuine concern for their needs, values which remain at the heart of the business.

Speaking to Chronicle, the company’s commercial manager, Mr Darryl Friend, said the founder’s story is one of dedication and passion for the city.

“After the war, Mr Pocock was stationed with the RAF in Bulawayo. He fell in love with the place and decided to make it his home. He started his estate agency after leaving the RAF, working alone from a modest office and advertising his services by knocking on doors across the city. The business soon grew, and he was later joined by his son. Together they developed an iconic Bulawayo agency, which has served many residents over the years,” said Mr Friend.

Mr Friend noted that the Pocock family also played a key role in the formation of the Estate Agents Council and contributed significantly to the drafting of the Estate Agents Act, legislation designed to protect both buyers and sellers from unscrupulous agents. He said the property market, despite facing challenges, has remained a relatively stable investment avenue over the years, even during periods of high inflation.

“Rental returns have fluctuated due to various pressures, but property has generally provided a solid hedge against inflation. While Harare tends to command a premium in property values compared to Bulawayo, the difference isn’t as stark as some might believe.

For investors willing to look beyond the capital, Bulawayo offers excellent value.”

John Pocock and Company thrives on its reputation in the property sector, specialising in sales, valuations, and property management.

“These services are delivered thanks to our dedicated staff, many of whom have served the company loyally over the years. Of course, there have been changes over the decades, but we’ve always retained a core team of hardworking, long-serving professionals who form the backbone of our operation,” said Mr Friend.

A few years ago, the company relocated from the city centre to the suburbs. The new premises offer convenient access and secure parking for clients. Despite the many economic and industry changes over the years, Mr Friend remains proud of the company’s legacy.

“Pocock for Property continues to serve Bulawayo with the same enthusiasm, honesty, efficiency, and professionalism instilled by its founder back in 1955,” he said.-herald
