Harare orders small to medium enterprises to register operations
The Harare City Council has directed all small to medium traders to go and register their operations at the nearest District Offices to be able to operate legally.
In a statement on Thursday, town clerk Hosea Chisango said the registration applies to tuck-shops, push carts, car parks, home industries and all market traders.
He said the registration is part of the SMEs Trade Management Programme and is in line with the city’s Small to Medium Enterprises policy of April 2023.
A section of the policy states that all SMEs trading in Harare shall be registered with the local authority for them to operate their businesses legally.
Rocked by a debilitating cholera outbreak, such registration would assist the city fathers in monitoring operations of some of the SMEs that include unlicensed and unhygienic food outlets.
The move by the city council comes at a time the government has ordered it to remove all illegal food vendors from the streets as part of efforts to stem the spread of cholera. – New Ziana
