Government transitions from cash vouchers to food distributions
GOVERNMENT is transitioning from cash to voucher food distribution programmes in rural areas to lessen the burden on communities in search of food to buy.
Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, July Moyo, on Friday said the Government is encouraging a transition from cash to voucher food distribution programme in rural areas.
Briefing journalists in Bulawayo after engaging stakeholders on the African Risk Capacity (ARC) insurance payout, Minister Moyo said the Government’s view is that it is easy to give people food vouchers instead of cash.
“As a Government, our view it is a burden to give people in rural communities cash as they often struggle to buy food.
“You find that there are instances where there are few shops which are well stocked with basic commodities and closet to the people.
“Therefore, we are saying to implement partners under Start Network, let us all procure food and give to people. Giving out money has its set of challenges,” said Minister Moyo.
The meeting was to shed light on the payout’s impact on vulnerable communities and ARC’s contribution to mitigating climate-related risks.-chronicles
