Government commits to investment in STEM

GOVERNMENT has pledged to continue driving investments towards unlocking opportunities through science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and robotics in Zimbabwe.

Promoting STEM education and robotics is at the heart of Government’s efforts to modernise the economy, creating jobs and enhancing Zimbabwe’s competitiveness in the global economy. Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services Deputy Minister, Dingumuzi Phuti, said this recently in Bulawayo while launching the National Hackathon Robotics Olympiad in Zimbabwe at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust).

“We are committed to ensuring that we continue to invest in programmes and initiatives that foster the growth of STEM education and robotics in Zimbabwe. We must provide our young people with the resources, mentorship, and platforms they need to turn their ideas into reality,” said Deputy Minister Phuti.

He outlined the ministry’s key initiatives such as the Zimbabwe Digital Schools Programme, National Robotics and Coding Competition, ICT Training Centres, and partnerships with industry and academia, as key programmes in this holistic approach. “Through these programmes, the ministry is empowering the youth of Zimbabwe to not only learn the technical skills of robotics, but to also apply that knowledge to solve real-world problems and drive sustainable development,” he said.

“By fostering innovation and creativity in STEM fields, the Government is positioning the country as a hub for technological advancement and a leader in the digital economy.” Deputy Minister Phuti said the event was a crucial step towards realising the vision of Education 5.0 and transforming Zimbabwe into a prosperous, knowledge-based society.

He said Government’s dedication to promoting STEM education and robotics was a clear indication of the Government’s commitment to preparing the next generation for the demands of the 21st century job market and a rapidly evolving global landscape. Deputy Minister Phuti praised the passion and dedication of the participants in the Olympiad.

“Together, we can ensure that Zimbabwe becomes a hub of innovation and technological excellence, not just in Africa, but around the world,” he said. “By nurturing our youth’s passion for robotics and automation, we are paving the way for a future where our country is at the forefront of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.” —chronicles
