Driving schools, council clash
HARARE City Council has been criticised by the Harare Driving Schools Association for hiking fees for ranking discs 75-fold, a move the association deems to be unfair and outrageous.
The council, was charging $134 for driving school light vehicles and $400 for heavy vehicles per term, but from the end of this month, light vehicles are required to pay $10 000 and heavy vehicles are to pay $15 000 per term. This means light vehicles are now paying $30 000 per year, while heavy vehicles pay $45 000.
Harare Driving Schools Association has since written to the city council requesting a downward review.
“The proposed fees for rank discs is too high for driving schools operating in greater Harare. For us to remain in business these fees should be reviewed downwards considering the current economic situation,” reads part of the letter co-signed by the association’s secretary general Mr Clemence Mugariri and the vice chairperson Mr Nelson Mbedzi.
“As small entreprises, we are proposing the reduction of rank disc fees to US$10 for light vehicles and US$20 for heavy vehicles or equivalent.”
Harare City Council corporate communications manager, Mr Michael Chideme, said the new figures were “inflation adjusted to allow council to continue providing the much needed service”.-heral.dl.zw
