The diaspora community contributes immensely to the development of the economy through financial and social remittances.

NKAYI Rural District Council (RDC) is set to host a diaspora investment conference in Bulawayo tomorrow as part of efforts aimed at attracting investment and showcasing opportunities in the district.

The event, which will be held at the Zimbabwe International Exhibition Centre (ZIEC), will be attended by both local and international potential investors.

In an interview, Nkayi District Development Co-ordinator, Ms Matilda Mlotshwa said the event will assist in promoting the spirit of unity among the Nkayi community.

“The conference will assist in achieving the dreams of the community of Nkayi and the vision of the nation as a whole. It will also reduce the dependency syndrome prevalent in the communities and encourage other communities to build the Nkayi they want,” she said.

Ms Mlotshwa said they are also targeting businesses that will be exhibiting at the Mine-Entra. She said they chose to hold the event in Bulawayo due to the poor state of Bulawayo-Nkayi and Kwekwe-Nkayi roads.

The flow of remittances to Zimbabwe is huge, with diaspora remittances from outside the country estimated at over US$1 billion per annum, which translates to 16 percent of total foreign exchange receipts. —chroncile
