JOURNALIST’S in Zimbabwe who mainly report on mining sector issues have set up an Association of Mining Journalists in Zimbabwe (AMJZ) to advance the quality, accuracy, and comprehensiveness of mining reporting in the country.
The initiative, announced by mining broadcaster Tafadzwa Dube, aims to promote excellence in mining journalism and facilitate well-informed reporting for the public and policymakers.
“The Association of Mining Journalists in Zimbabwe (AMJZ) is proud to announce its official establishment marking a significant milestone in the realm of mining journalism,’’ said Dube.
The AMJZ has outlined key objectives including capacity building, organizing mine visits, and forming partnerships within the mining sector.
It plans to conduct training sessions, workshops, and seminars to equip journalists with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively report on mining, encompassing technical terminology, regulatory frameworks, and economic factors relevant to the industry.
In addition, the association will arrange regular visits to various mining sites in Zimbabwe to provide journalists with firsthand insights into mining operations.
Also the AMJZ will facilitate international tours for journalists to engage with international investors and observe best practices in mining worldwide.
“AMJZ will offer comprehensive training sessions, workshops, and seminars aimed at equipping journalists with the essential knowledge and skills to effectively report on mining. These programs will cover technical terminology, regulatory frameworks, and economic factors pertinent to the industry,” said Dube.
“AMJZ will organize regular visits to various mining sites across Zimbabwe. These visits will offer invaluable insights into the practical aspects of mining.”
Furthermore, the association seeks to bridge the gap between the media and the mining sector by fostering partnerships and collaborations, ensuring that journalists have access to accurate and current information to promote transparency and informed reporting.
The AMJZ anticipates a range of benefits for both the mining sector and the media industry in Zimbabwe.
Dube highlighted that specialised training will lead to more accurate and insightful reports, benefiting stakeholders and the public.
Enhanced media coverage is anticipated to foster greater transparency within the mining sector, thereby promoting accountability and trust.
“High-quality journalism will ensure that the public and policymakers are well-informed, leading to better decision-making. Accurate and reliable reporting on the mining sector will help attract local and international investment by providing a clear picture of the industry’s potential and challenges.”
Dube said AMJZ is committed to elevating the standards of mining journalism in Zimbabwe and intends to work collaboratively with journalists, mining companies, and other stakeholders to achieve these objectives.
