Chartered Governance & Accountancy Annual Conference kicks off

THE 2023 Annual Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute of Zimbabwe (CGAIZ) Conference, kicks off here today with a focus on accelerating the economic transformation to buttress the attainment of Government’s vision of an upper middle-income status by 2030.

About 250 delegates drawn from different economic sectors have registered their participation. Most of them had arrived at the venue by the end of the day yesterday ahead of the start of the official proceedings today.

This year’s conference which ends on Saturday runs under the theme: “Attaining Vision 2030, Chartered Governance and Accountancy Professionals – Catalysts for Economic Transformation”.

The conference brings together local and foreign governance and accounting professionals, chief executive officers, managing directors, auditors, human resource and marketing officials and students, among others.

Today and tomorrow’s sessions are expected to deliver high-level panel presentations from key speakers.

These include CGAIZ chief executive Dr Lovemore Gomera, its president Jonathan Dube, Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) Governor Dr John Mangudya, Zimra Commissioner General Ms Regina Chinamasa, and Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce (ZNCC) CEO Mr Christopher Mugaga.

Others are World Bank senior representative Mr Patrick Kabuya, business consultants and development partner organisation leaders.

The presenters will lead the delegates in tackling several topics including the need to strengthen Zimbabwean institutional capacity for the attainment of Vision 2030, good corporate governance, upholding ethics and the role of public audits among others.

“A lot needs to be done to strengthen institutions in Zimbabwe and achieve the goals of Vision 2030. There is a need to focus on improving the rule of law and reducing corruption.

“More emphasis is needed on strengthening the capacity of public institutions such as the civil service and all government departments,” said CGAIZ in a preliminary statement.

“There is a need for a commitment to good governance and transparency.”

The need for “mind renewal” and leaders who continually challenge their own assumptions and ways of thinking, will be one of the top discussion points during the conference.

In tackling the good corporate governance aspect, the conference is expected to draw insights from global perspectives more so as companies and organisations operate within a global village setting in the face of digitisation and adoption of new technology.

Delegates would equally delve into the intricacies of public audits with the view of coming up with recommendations on how to strengthen the audits.

By providing independent and objective assessments of how well an organisation is fulfilling its mandate, the CGAIZ says public audits can help to ensure accountability and transparency in a big way.

These will be tackled in close connection with the assessment of the future of business in Zimbabwe and how businesses could be assisted in growing the national cake from a banker’s perspective.

This is critical given that it is coming at a time when Zimbabwe is facing economic challenges that are impeding its ability to grow.-chronicle
